POSITION SUMMARY
The Director of Library Services plays a crucial role at Noorda College of Osteopathic Medicine by assisting faculty, staff, and students in finding and accessing information resources, including books, academic journals, databases, and digital materials. The Director is responsible for developing and maintaining library collections specific to medical education, carefully selecting and acquiring new materials that align with the institutions needs and research focus areas. The Director provides instruction on information literacy and research methodologies, assisting patrons with how to effectively search and evaluate information. The Director supports research projects and curriculum development, where appropriate. The Director also manages and organizes digital resources, creates research guides, and may be involved in data management and preservation of scholarly works.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
1) Implements the vision with leadership for Noorda-COM Michael D. Elton Library
- Reports to the Associate Dean of Academic Affairs.
- Develops and communicates a strategic vision for library services aligned with the evolving needs of osteopathic medicine.
- Oversees the collection development process for Noorda-COM Libraries, formulate policies to create an objective collection development policy for library collections.
- Proactively pursues grant and external funding opportunities in advocacy for the library and Noorda-COM community
- Is knowledgeable of and remains in compliance with all institutional policies and procedures as outlined in the Employee Handbook for Noorda-COM College.
- Responds to inquiries regarding library resources related to college policies and procedures requiring interpretation from the perspective of the library.
2) Administrative Management of Library Services
2.1 Budget Management:- Develops departmental budget recommendations in collaboration with the Associate Dean of Academic Affairs.
- Responsible for fiscal accountability for prudent management of financial resources, ensuring adherence to college practices.
- Monitors and reconciles monthly expenses (examine income/expense statements and other documents, assess needs [operating and capital], ensure optimal utilization of facilities and resources, follow protocols, formulate recommendations, etc.
2.2 Oversee Technical Services Resources
- Oversees the life cycle of physical and electronic resources within the library: orders, processes, catalogs, maintains physical stacks and electronic holdings.
- Establishes, documents, and updates procedures relating to technical services.
- Ensures the integrity of the library’s database of bibliographic records by performing regular maintenance on bibliographic records to clean up records and improve accuracy.
- Gathers and maintains a usage statistics repository for all electronic resources where available.
- Provides input for collection development practices based on usage.
- Oversees interlibrary loan operations for Noorda College.
- Oversees on and off campus authentication (access) for electronic resources: coordinates with OCLC and reports IP ranges to vendors as needed.
- Manages the design, testing, deployment, maintenance, troubleshooting, administration, and evaluation of multiple discovery, delivery, and inventory systems including Ovid Discovery Service (ODS)[knowledgebase, link resolver, discovery search], Koha ILS [library catalog], OCLC WorldShare & Tipasa [Interlibrary Loan], DOCLINE [Interlibrary Loan], etc.
- Administers and oversee the resources needed for the circulation of library materials.
- Serves as copyright liaison for Noorda College: answers researchers’ questions about copyright and connects them to appropriate resources.
2.3 Library Services Personnel Management:
- Oversees personnel recordkeeping (vacation, holiday, sick time, etc.) monitoring activities, recording absences, directing the updating of files, etc.
- Leads and build a strong, team-oriented staff for Library Services
- Provides leadership and mentoring of direct report, Technical Services Librarian: defining/outlining roles and responsibilities, assigning tasks/ projects, coordinating cohesive productivity, providing guidance toward optimal performance, clarifying/instructing on duties, deadlines, and expectations; reviewing/conducting performance evaluations.
- Establishes and communicates accountabilities and performance expectations for Library Services personnel, using institution approved tools.
- Assists with serving as a resource for problem resolution within the processes set forth by the College.
- Establishes standards and serves as a role model for Library Services personnel for positive attitude, attendance, and work performance.
- Continually manages and evaluates staffing levels, divisions of responsibility, and organizational structure.
3) Outreach, Collaboration, and Facilitation
3.1 Vendor Relationships:
- Troubleshoots electronic resource access issues with vendors including issues about losing access, account difficulties, broken features, proxy, etc.
- Configures and maintains vendor administration accounts for all electronic resources: enters link resolver details and maintains title lists for verification of rights.
- Configures and maintains various link resolver entries to allow third parties such as PubMed, Google Scholar, Browzine, and individual publishers to link to Noorda’s electronic resources holdings.
- Administers and advertises trials with electronic resource vendors for potential library resources.
- Assists in communications for select library and related products with vendors, publishers, and the Noorda-COM community.
3.2 Nurture relationships with Noorda community:
- Fosters a culture of collaboration, inclusivity, and continuous improvement within the library and across the Noorda-COM community.
- Develops programming opportunities (Lunch and Learns, Professional Development, etc.) for students, faculty, and staff.
- Publicizes the library space(s) to maximize patron engagement within physical and digital spaces of library.
- Compiles and report on library usage statistics for regional and national membership associations and consortia.
- Reports evidence-based usage reports to Associate Dean of Academic Affairs to illustrate usage of resources.
- Oversees the library website, create and manage customized resource pages for faculty and students.
- Initiates UX use and case studies for the library website.
- Oversees preceptor management website and service.
- Reports, in concordance with departmental channels, relevant resource updates and changes as necessary.
3.3 Information Literacy Education
- Develops and deliver content in Information Literacy, Evidence-based practice, critical appraisal, and information integrity within the curriculum to prepare learners for the fast-paced evolution of informatics advances.
- Observes trends in medical librarianship and medical education to continually refine the information literacy instructional strategy within the curriculum.
- Works effectively as a team member to enhance and improve information literacy curricula, including potential opportunities for collaborative efforts within the department or with outside individuals, programs, or departments; maintaining a climate hospitable to creativity and innovation.
- Develops and maintains a working knowledge of various teaching and assessment approaches.
3.4 Research Support
- As needed, provides assistance for literature search services
- As requested, works with faculty, students, researchers, preceptors, employees to conduct systematic reviews and synthesis of evidence in the form of scholarly research and published research data on topics pertaining to medicine and other related areas of research.
- Maximizes student research opportunities by serving as a Primary Investigator commensurate with SME area(s).
- Stays abreast of trends in research, scholarship, and sustainability in academic medicine, communicates as necessary.
4) Publications and Presentation- Presents on a variety of research topics at various conferences locally, nationally and internationally including developing content, submitting for consideration, finalizing presentation and delivering on time
- Serves as a leader in involvement, professional development, and service within the profession.
- Advocates for the continued growth, professional development, and culture of innovation for team members.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Certification:
- Required: A master’s degree in library or information science from an ALA-accredited program.
- Preferred qualifications: Academic library experience, collections assembly experience, AHIP certification, grant- writing experience.
- Experience: Minimum of five (5) years of experience in a leadership role in a library or related institution is required. Experience in a health sciences library preferred, but academic or special library experience will be considered.
- Demonstration of effective performance in research and teaching.
- Experience supporting osteopathic medical research is preferred.
- Creative and scholarly work and service commitment commensurate with appointment to the level of Library Assistant Professor or above.
- Evidence of effective, consistent mentoring of students, pre-doctoral fellows, post-graduate residents/fellows, and /or faculty-peers.
- Evidence of creating opportunities for resource sharing
- Evidence of familiarity with theory and practice of teaching research skills to medical students.
- Demonstrated experience with planning and budgeting.
- Evidence of successful department resource allocation.
- Knowledge of curriculum design and program assessment.

The Noorda College of Osteopathic Medicine is seeking qualified candidates to support our unique, innovative curricular model designed for a modern-day medical school. We have received pre-accreditation status with the Commission for Osteopathic College Accreditation and have three cohorts of medical students (totaling more than 400 students) enrolled in Spring 2024.
