Job Summary
Handles the clerical duties of a nursing unit, including reception, transmittal of messages, records, directing guests, mail and transcription of physician's orders. May assist in inventory and ordering supplies. Requires knowledge of medical terminology, keyboarding skills, and at least 2 years prior clerical experience.

Duties Include:
  • Assembling and restocking charts, labeling chart pages. Noting and transcribing physician's orders to medication administration record
  • Registering patients in the emergency room. Completing admissions face sheet and obtaining signatures
  • Contacting Dietary, Laboratory and Radiology - with new orders
  • Completing requisitions for lab / x-rays and delivering to the departments
  • Answering the telephone at the nurse's station
  • Completing charts as needed. Check and transfer information. Typing policies, protocols etc.
  • Restocking of forms, office supplies in acute care and emergency room.
  • Performs 24-hour chart checks for new orders as needed. Prepares extra acute care, OB, ER observation and Long Term Care charts. Checks LTC lab list on a daily basis and prepares requisitions to deliver to the lab
  • Verifies count and sign in LTC medications from the drug store
  • Performs additional duties as required
Qualifications
  • Familiarity with medical terminology is a plus. Attention to detail and an understanding of confidential nature of medical records is needed. Polite, friendly manner, good communication and telephone skills, computer skills are required. Past experience in a medical center or hospital is helpful
  • Education. A high school graduate with experience in an office or hospital setting
  • Training and Experience. Receives on-the-job training. Computer input / data ability required.
Accountability
This position reports directly to the Nursing Supervisor or Director of Nursing. Day to day direction and instruction may also come from the nursing staff.
