Salary: $51,084.80 - $80,912.00

Starting salary will generally start at the lower end of the salary range, DOQ

For lateral transfers starting salary will be based on years of service and qualifications on a year for year basis.

GENERAL PURPOSE

Performs a wide variety of working-level firefighting duties related to protecting the life and property of City residents.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Works under the close supervision of the Fire Chief or Fire Captains.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

These are intended to be accurate summaries of what the job classification involves and what is required to perform it. Employees are responsible for all other duties as assigned.

  • Responds to fire alarms and extinguishes fire;
  • Responds to calls for emergency medical services, and renders first aid;
  • Performs salvage operations such as throwing salvage covers, sweeping water, and removing debris;
  • Responds to and renders assistance in emergency cases;
  • Cleans and inspects equipment and apparatus after returning from a fire;
  • Inspects equipment and apparatus and notifies superior officer of any defects;
  • Makes minor repairs to equipment and apparatus, performs routine preventative maintenance tasks, and keeps records of such action;
  • Keeps fire station, equipment, and grounds in a clean and orderly condition;
  • Participates in training activities and instruction sessions;
  • Acquires and retains a thorough knowledge of the City, including streets, buildings, water supply, unusual hazards, and related items;
  • Performs various public information or education tasks;
  • Enters inspection, training, and (on occasion) fire and emergency medical service calls into the records management systems;
  • Performs all work duties and activities in accordance with City policies and procedures;
  • Respond to specialized situations such as hazardous materials, confined space, extrication, and technical rescues that may include high and low angle, swift water, trench, and collapse rescues;

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

2. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Working knowledge of firefighting methods, techniques, and procedures; firefighting equipment types and varieties and their most appropriate and effective use; equipment and maintenance and care; state and city codes, laws, and regulations, and ordinances related to fire prevention; fire vehicle equipment; emergency medical techniques and procedures and possess strong interpersonal communication skills.

Ability to follow detailed verbal or written work instruction; work in dangerous emergency situations; perform strenuous physical labor; communicate effectively, verbally and in writing; assimilate modern fire prevention and firefighting skills; perform under extreme weather conditions; work on-call and on-shift work; develop effective working relationships with supervisors, fellow employees, and the public.

3. Special Qualifications:

Must possess a valid Driver’s License.

Must be State Firefighter I and II certified.

Must be Utah Advanced EMT.

Must be Hazmat Operations and Awareness certified.

Must be Apparatus Operator certified within two years of hire.

Must be Apparatus Aerial certified within two years of hire.

Must be a Fire Inspector or Company Inspector certified within two years of hire.

Must be Wildland Firefighter I within one year of hire.

Preference will be given to Technical Rescue certifications.

4. Work Environment:

Functions of the position are generally performed in a controlled environment but are subject to all seasonal and weather extremes. Emergency response travel is expected in the normal course of performing duties. Many functions of the work pose a high degree of hazard uncertainty. Physical readiness and conditioning may be a condition of job retention. Various levels of mental application are required, i.e., memory for details, emotional stability, discriminating thinking, creative problem solving, and continuous use of motor skills.
